Idol....But ?

Whether one is a fan of Sanjaya Malakar’s
singing or not, one certainly has to admire the way that this
seventeen year old singer has handled the media spotlight with
poise and wisdom far beyond his years. Considering everything
that was being said about him, Sanjaya could easily have buckled
under the pressure, and no one would probably have blamed him.

On Tuesday’s Latin-themed night, Sanjaya’s
performance in Spanish came as a fitting finale. After Sanjaya's
slow (somewhat boring) performance in last night's show, Randy
and Paula gave Sanjaya 'props' for a great performance. After
anxiously awaiting for Simon's always-negative comments, Sanjaya
batted his eyes for the cameras, and the biggest surprise of
the night was Cowell's reaction........Full

Malakar, teenager, makes the Top 24 to the semi-finals of the 'American
Idol'
Sanjaya Malakar makes the Top 24

Sanjaya Malakar, 17, currently lives in Federal Way, Washington
attended the auditions with his sister Shyamali. Sanjaya’s
father was a classical Indian musician, so they were raised around
music. The 24, 12 men and 12 women, are the cream of the thousands
who auditioned across the nation for the contest which could get
the top artistes highly lucrative contracts. He spent four years
in Hawaii performing with the Hawaii Children’s Theater. Shyamali
got cut in the ‘Hollywood’ round.
Sanjaya Malakar sang Stevie Wonder’s “Sign, Sealed,
Delivered.” Simon Cowell said “A lot better than your
sister.” Randy Jackson said “Yeah, I thought so too,
wow, crazy.” Paula Abdul said “Well, I think this is
good news.”
Simon added “She has the stage presence, and I think you
have the better voice. You’re like a shy little thing, whose
got a good voice.” All three judges agreed on putting Sanjaya
through to Hollywood.
- Of course, they were nervous as hell but as the judges observed,
Shyamali had better screen presence and Sanjaya had the better
singing ability. Of course, Idol was quick to pitch this as a
sibling rivalry. Going by Shyamali’s expression after her
brother was asked by Seacrest whom did the judges think had the
better voice, she might actually be falling for it. Sanjaya humbly
refused to answer the question
- Now both Shyamali and Sanjaya have it in them to at least make
it to the final 12 if they brush up on their charisma and get
over their relative shyness. I just hope the sibling rivalry angle
doesn’t cause their mutual downfall.
