Abrar Alvi
Whether one is a fan of Sanjaya Malakar’s
singing or not, one certainly has to admire the way that this
seventeen year old singer has handled the media spotlight with
poise and wisdom far beyond his years. Considering everything
that was being said about him, Sanjaya could easily have buckled
under the pressure, and no one would probably have blamed him.
NRI Sanjaya won't even turn 18 till September this
year, but Sanjaya Malakar has already become a celebrity in America.
The first NRI (non-resident Indian) to make it so far on the show,
Sanjaya's attempt to become the sixth American Idol stalled on
Wednesday night.
Sanjaya lost. But the community may have gained
another role model. He may be out of Idol but his fans needn't
despair - they'll surely hear more of him since a recording deal
is very possible. Common sense of course would make one believe
that no one wants to be called the 'worst' and now Sanjaya has
confirmed it.
Sanjaya is not thrilled with VFTW or radio shock
jock Howard Stern. When asked by AOL Television "What role
do you think Vote for the worst.com or Howard Stern played in
your staying power," the Idol castoff replied. "I don't
think that (VFTW) or Howard Stern really have enough people voting
for enough times to make a dent. I think the reason why I'm here
is solely because of my support from fans."
Now, rumor has it that Britney Spears wants to jump
on the Sanjaya bandwagon as a part of her attempted comeback.
"Britney started watching American Idol when she was in rehab.
She became a huge Sanjaya fan and thinks the two of them can make
beautiful music together," according the National Ledger
who was quoting a source from Star Magazine.Star has the whole
story in this week's issue.
On Saturday night, People magazine invited the
androgonous one to attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner
in Washington. Sanjaya was a hit! He was a guest of People magazine,
joining fellow celebs Valerie Bertinelli, High School Musical
star Zac Efron, Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, comedian Eddie
Izzard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “It’s been really
a whirlwind. I’ve just been trying to ride the wave and
go one day at a time,” said Malakar, wearing a dark pinstriped
suit and highlighted, loose curls.
Sanjaya had the longest line for autographs, and
he even met Elliot Spitzer who was pushed away by People reps
until they found out he was the governor of New York!
Sanjaya Malakar, the most recent contestant voted
off American Idol is continuing his farewell tour with a stop
at the Late Show With David Letterman tonight.
He said, “I want to go into acting or modeling,
maybe Broadway.”
