NRI (non-resident Indian) , UK teenager Kiran Matharu
has scored a stunning success in the Faldo Series,
winning the girls championship by 11 shots.
The 15-year-old girl international from Leeds, stormed
away from the field in the final at Burhill with a
five-under par 68 and a one-over 74. Kiran, who is
a member of Team Faldo, followed up her win by playing
a five-ball betterball with Nick Faldo, Oliver Fisher,
Carly Booth and James Heath, the winner of the Under
21 section. The group finished 15 under par.
This major win caps the season for Kiran, who took
up golf only 4½ years ago and has a handicap
of plus-two. Her other achievements in 2004 include
reaching final qualifying for the womens British
Open, finishing runner-up in the English Girls
Championship and helping England retain the Stroyan
Cup in the girls home internationals.
When she was about 12, she went to the golf course
with her dad and was just watching him hit balls on
the range.
