Early Life and Activism in Sri Lanka

Born and raised in Sri Lanka, Logan Kanapathi experienced firsthand the challenges of living in a conflict-ridden nation. The country was engulfed in a violent civil war, during which systemic oppression and atrocities were committed against the Tamil minority. As a university student, Kanapathi emerged as a student leader and an outspoken critic of the government’s policies. His advocacy for Tamil rights and justice earned him recognition but also put his life in grave danger.

Forced into Exile

In 1983, amid increasing threats to his safety due to his activism, Kanapathi made the difficult decision to flee Sri Lanka. He sought refuge in Canada, leaving behind a homeland fraught with persecution. Canada provided him with a new beginning, but his commitment to human rights did not waver.

Life in Canada and Continued Advocacy

Settling in Canada, Kanapathi quickly became an active member of the Tamil diaspora and broader Canadian society. His experiences as a refugee fueled his passion for social justice, and he continued to advocate for marginalized communities. His dedication to public service and his work within the community earned him widespread respect, with many encouraging him to enter politics to give a voice to the voiceless.

Political Career and Public Service

Kanapathi took his first step into politics at the municipal level, serving as a city councilor in Markham. His tenure was marked by efforts to improve community services, promote inclusivity, and support local businesses. His ability to bridge cultural divides and address community concerns established him as a trusted leader.

In 2018, Kanapathi made history by being elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Markham–Thornhill. He won the election with over 50 percent of the popular vote, reflecting the strong support and trust he had garnered over the years. As an MPP, he has worked tirelessly to advocate for policies that promote diversity, support new immigrants, and improve healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for all Ontarians.
