Hundreds of Sikhs from Palm Springs, Los Angeles and Indio area joined the celebration of the Baisakhi festival at Gurdwara, 66972 8TH ST, Palm Springs, California.
Baisakhi commemorates the day in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th of the Sikh Gurus, bestowed and blessed Sikhs with the unique form, appearance and discipline associated with the Sikh way of life. Baisakhi also coincides with the first Spring Harvest and the Sikh New Year.“It’s the day the image of the Sikh was born. It’s the day of the creation of the Sikh rule of conduct,” said Gurdwara Sewadar. The event also provides the gurdwara with an opportunity for co
mmunity outreach, to help dispel many misconceptions about Sikhs.
One of the main events on Baisakhi is the raising of the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag. The huge flagpole must be unbolted and lowered as scores of men and women support its weight, and others sing shabads. The flagpole is then washed and the new flag is installed.
