SAS Nagar, March 25: MOHALI Police today arrested
Amarjit Singh alias Sweety who had allegedly killed
Harpreet Singh, a seventeen-year-old boy of Phase
X, Mohali, with a sharp-edged weapon in Phase IIIB-2.
Amarjit Singh was today arrested at the Ropar Bus
Stand where he was trying to leave the city on a bus.
Amarjit Singh had allegedly stabbed Harpreet Singh
eight times in a drunken brawl on the night of March
22 in the parking outside a lodge in Phase III-B2
of Mohali where the two along with Jagir Singh (father
of Harpreet Singh) had been reportedly drinking whisky.
Mohali SP Varinderpal Singh while talking to Newsline
said that during the investigation the police found
that Amarjit was an NRI and had been deported from
USA on August 2004 after committing some major offence.
He was living from hand to mouth and took a room
on rent in Phase-II some eight months back where Harpreets
father Jagir singh ran a food joint.
Amarjit used to take meals or call Jagir or Harpreet
for home delivery and developed contacts with the
two.
According to SP Mohali Amarjit Singhs mother
came back from USA and took him to Sangatpura village
in Phagwara to hand him the land owned by the family.
She transferred the family land in Amarjits
name and went back to USA.
With the increase of the price of land, Amarjit sold
some of his land and started living lavishly. He also
bought two expensive cars.
In Mohali he had contacts only with the Jagirs
family and he often used to visit them.
SP Mohali said that there were already three FIRs
of quarrelling against Amarjit in Ludhiana, Phagwara
and Jalandhar as he had a tendency to get violent
after getting drunk.
On March 22, Amarjit was in Chandigarh where his
car met with an accident and he was arrested by the
Chandigarh Police in Sector 36.
He called up Harpreet who took his father with him
and the matter was settled with a compromise and no
case was registered then. The SP said that Amarjit
would be produced in the court tomorrow.
