Canada was the second country in the world  after Uruguay and the first G7 nation to permit 30 grams of legal marijuana in public. Legalizing cannabis is expected to create an industry worth more than $4 billion in Canada. Marijuana will not be sold in the same location as alcohol or tobacco. The Cannabis (called "pot," "weed," "grass," etc.) is typically spread on rolling papers and formed into a cigarette, often referred to as a joint, or a cigar-like blunt.

Information has been sent to 15m households about the new laws and public awareness campaigns.Consumers are expected to purchase the drug from retailers regulated by provinces and territories or from federally licensed producers when those options are not available.

The Canadian Medical Association has said when pot becomes legal for recreational use on Oct. 17, two distinct systems for medicinal and recreational products will be unnecessary. The CMA says some of its members are uncomfortable prescribing cannabis due to a lack of high-quality research. Medical marijuana users require approval from a doctor before being allowed to order medical marijuana online from a government-licensed producer.

Marijuana is used for a variety of conditions, with varying degrees of scientific support. For some, including anxiety and PTSD, researchers have said the hype outweighs the evidence. MacKillop and Jason Busse, his co-director at McMaster's cannabis research centre, said the evidence is stronger for others, including chronic, non-cancer pain, treatment-resistant seizures, muscle spasticity for those with multiple sclerosis and loss of appetite among patients who are receiving chemotherapy

What are marijuana effects?

After smoke marijuana, THC and other chemicals -pass from the lungs into the bloodstream-then rapidly carries to the brain. Eating or drinking marijuana delivers significantly less THC into the bloodstream than smoking. Marijuana can be smoked, eaten, vaporized, brewed and even taken topically, but most people smoke it. Marijuana reaches the same pleasure centers in the brain that are targeted by heroin, cocaine and alcohol. Depending on the quantity, quality and method of consumption, marijuana can produce a feeling of euphoria — or high — by stimulating brain cells to release the chemical dopamine.

  • Many people experience a pleasant euphoria and sense of relaxation.
  • Others common effects- heightened sensory perception, laughter, altered perception of time, and increased appetite.
  • Some people experience anxiety, fear, distrust, or panic

The marijuana has an unexpectedly high potency. The increased potency makes it difficult to determine the short- and long-term effects of marijuana. People who have taken large doses of marijuana may experience an acute psychosis, which includes hallucinations, delusions, and a loss of the sense of personal identity. THC may remain in the body for days or even weeks after use.

About 30 percent users may have some degree of marijuana use disorder, according to NIDA. Long-term marijuana users who try to quit experience cravings, irritability, sleeplessness, decreased appetite and anxiety

School Children/University Students:

  • When marijuana used by students, it can have a significant impact on brain development, including decreased brain activity, fewer neural fibers in certain areas and a smaller than average hippocampus, which controls learning and memory functions.
  • According to a 2014 Northwestern Medicine study of teen marijuana users, memory-related structures in the brain appeared to shrink, a possible signs of a decrease in neurons. These abnormalities remained two years after the teen stopped using marijuana, indicating that the drug has long-term effects and look similar to brains of schizophrenics. Those who started using marijuana after 21 generally do not experience the same type of brain abnormalities as those who started using the drug earlier.
  • The University of Montreal published in the journal Development and Psychopathology in 2016 found similar results after researching almost 300 students. Those that started smoking around age 14 did worse on some cognitive tests than non-smokers. The study found that pot smokers also have a higher school dropout rate. Those that waited to start around age 17 did not seem to have the same impairments.

The doctors and researchers have suspected for decades that some compounds in marijuana might effectively treat epilepsy and other hard-to-cure conditions

  • In US, Medical marijuana is legal in 23 states, but federal law still classifies the plant as a Schedule 1 drug, “with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” according to the Drug Enforcement Agency. (Heroin and LSD are also Schedule 1 drugs.) This means that, even though doctors and researchers have suspected for decades that some compounds in marijuana might effectively treat epilepsy and other hard-to-cure conditions, independent clinical trials that include human subjects—let alone minors—are scant and require approval from three separate federal agencies.
  • TIME suggests that many of the epileptic children receiving medical marijuana are not benefiting from the drug at all....READ

Freda Vaughan-Williams I am a medical cannabis patient who has successfully treated Diverticulosis, arthritis, Psoriasis, Pain due to spinal damage in the neck and lower back, as well as anxiety and depression and have regained full functionality and a complete rejuvenation of my health and wellbeing as a result so YES I AM.

The endocannabinoid system, named after the plant that led to its discovery, is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health.

Freda Vaughan-Williams You need to read up on this more! I know your generation is so against this drug. My father was not a smoker, but when he got cancer they gave him 10 months to live. He got down to 100 lbs. and finally decided to give pot a try! He lived 2-1/2 more years because the pot allowed him to have an appetite and eat!........livescience.com

Marijuana Legalization Will Affect Your Ability To Enter The U.S:

The US boarder staff are really going to give Canadians a hard time!

  • Driving a vehicle while under the influence of marijuana could be considered evidence of associated harmful behaviour.
  • A person is inadmissible if they're determined to be a drug abuser or addict.
  • Admitting to marijuana use prior to the enactment of the Cannabis Act will also likely prevent you from entering.
  • An individual who is employed in the marijuana industry in Canada could theoretically be denied admission based on a USCBP officer's "reasonable belief" that they're an illicit trafficker (or a knowing aider, abettor, assister, conspirator or colluder) of a controlled substance.

A Canadian citizen (and any other foreign national) who intends to work for a U.S.-based company involved in the marijuana industry, even in a U.S. state that has legalized it, is likely to be denied entry as a controlled substance trafficker. This can result in a permanent bar to the U.S.

Recreational marijuana use is legal in the State of Colorado. However, such conduct continues to be a violation of U.S. federal law even in states where it has been legalized.

NRI Community leaders says: Legalizing marijuana will harm health of youth in Canada

  • The legalization of marijuana is a far more drastic and encourage marijuana use, thereby putting all Canadians at risk.
  • The use of a marijuana that is sure to cause untold suffering for countless families in the form of impaired driving accidents, workplace accidents and adverse health consequences
  • An aspect that is worrying the police departments is that there is currently no reliable test for cannabis impairment. A saliva test is available, but more work is needed.
  • Unfortunately, governments always like to generate easy revenue from lotteries, casinos, the legal sale of marijuana and bring students from other countries with double fees. They don't care about local citizens

A 2016 Gallup poll found that one in eight people smoke marijuana and 43 percent of U.S. adults admit to trying it.
