Independence Day- The flagship event celebrations takes place in Delhi, where the prime minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort and delivers from its ramparts a speech on 15 August, commemorating the nation's independence from British rule on 15 August 1947. Along with freedom, this was the day when 250,000- 1,000,000 people on both sides of the new borders (Punjab) died in the violence. Millions of Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu refugees trekked across the newly drawn borders in the months surrounding independence.
On Jan 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the Tryst with Destiny speech proclaiming India's independence.
- Many years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity
NRIs (Non-resident-Indians) celebrate Independence Day around the world, particularly in regions with higher concentrations of Indian immigrants. In some locations, such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and other US cities, 15 August has become "India Day" among the NRIs and the local populace.

Priyanka Chopra Lost Respect in NRI Community
While on her business Trip to LA, she charged Over $20,000
to attend Indian Independence Day Celebrations
Despite this function being organized by a non profit organization, Priyanka Chopra was paid more than $ 20,000 for her two-three hour or so appearance. Also she did not perform or entertain the audience in any manner.
- The point here to consider is whether it was really worth spending such a huge amount from the hard earned dollars by the NRIs who donated in remembrance of India’ Independence Day celebrations.
- Isn’t Priyanka Chopra Indian too
- Could She not give two hours of her time and joined her compatriots in these celebrations free of charge. If she had done so, this huge amount could have been donated to other needy charities.
- Most of the Community leaders and Business Leaders argue that India Independence Day celebration should include patriotic songs, patriotic films, encourage children's talent and community services, not unprecedented crowd by actresses or actors.
- "To hoists the national flag, no body should be hired with money," said Dr. Arun Mehta from Toronto. " Millions sacrificed their lives to get freedom and we should not do these kinds of activites on this day."
There's really so much information on this topic:
Survey conclusions:
"It was disheartening to see an open display of disunity, in-fighting and factionalism," said Surinder Singh. "Most of the 2nd generation young NRIs and American politicians were so confused from their colorful advertisement confirming or inviting movie stars and politicians who are joining these functions."
- What message these groups gave to India’s Consul General, U.S. Congressman and the council members, Sheriff Lee Bacca and Mayor of the city of Artesia where the community has large majority of Indian businesses.
- Both the groups sang India’s National Anthem which implies unity amongst the “Punjab-Sindhu-Gujarata-Maratha-Dravida-Utkala-Banga.” Did they pay any respect to the message of unity in the national anthem?
According to NRIpress-Club News media survey:
- 90% business owners say: there should be one function
- 80% say they should add community services
- 60% say Actors should not charge penny because this is an India Celebration Day
Well as the memories are short lived, some other actor would be paid similarly in 2014.
“Patriotic NRIs, (non-resident Indian), regardless of race, religion or political affiliation should unite as one demand in a loud and clear voice for one India Day Celebration in the month of Aug. in one city,” said A. Agarwal. “India Independence Day celebration is very important for the rapidly growing Indian community.”
