MISSISSAUGA, Rogers Television tips its hat to Mississaugas
Citizen of the Year for 2005, Dufferin-Peel Station
Manager Jake Dheer.
Mississauga Mayor, Hazel McCallion, will present
the Gordon S. Shipp Memorial Award on Thursday May
26th . In celebration of his prestigious honour, Rogers
Television Dufferin-Peel staff will join Dheer's family,
colleagues and community representatives at a reception
hosted by Rogers Televisions Vice-President
Colette Watson.
"To win makes me feel even more humbled,"
says Dheer. "I don't know of any volunteer who
does it for the recognition. It's a cliche, but it's
true. You make a living by what you get, but you make
a life by what you give." Dheer has made a life-long
commitment to helping others. He began his volunteer
career in the early 1980s with the Mississauga Central
Lions Club. Always willing and able to help, Dheer
still contributes to several local causes including:
Community Living Mississauga, Carassauga, the United
Way, the Mississauga Chinese Business Association,
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, and The Mississauga
Board of Trade.
Jake Dheer, station manager at Rogers Television
in Mississauga, oversees the production of dozens
of community programs. He also knows how to stretch
out a 24-hour day.
As a child growing up in Kitchener, Dheer was inspired
to volunteer by his father, who was president of the
local India-Canada Association. For Dheer, the reasons
for volunteering are simple: "Volunteers do it
because there's a need. You see something needs to
be done and you do it. I was brought up with those
roots, says Dheer.
Dheer says volunteering has not only helped his community,
but it has made him a better person.
The award is presented annually by The Mississauga
News, the Mississauga Real Estate Board in conjunction
with the City of Mississauga.
The awards ceremony for Citizen of the Year
is being held in the Great Hall at the Mississauga
Civic Centre from 4-7pm on May 26th.
