JAY SEAN aka (Kamaljit
Singh Jhooti)'s US debut single "Down" just reached
No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. He is the first South
Asian, pop-R&B singer-songwriter and
He was waiting for weeks for the Black Eyed Peas to give
up the coveted position. They have been holding the No. 1
spot for 26 weeks. But when their song "I Gotta Feeling"
dropped to the No. 4 slot this week, Jay Sean was waiting
in the wings.
In just 14 weeks, the British pop-R&B singer-songwriter
of Sikh Punjabi descent has topped the charts, making him
the first solo male artist from South Asia to claim this honor.
.
JAY SEAN SAID:
- This is insane. It’s just
incredible to have reached No 1 with my first release
in America.
- It’s difficult for me to put into words. My head
is spinning..
- I've been grinding hard for the last seven years independently
- so to have the biggest record here is a dream come true.
"All the radio people are asking, 'Dude, where did you
come from?' But who cares? I love all this."
His debut single becomes his first Hot 100 No. 1. The track
also climbs to the top of Hot 100 Airplay with a total of
115 million listener impressions and rises 5-3 on Hot Digital
Songs, where is has moved 1.5 million downloads since its
release.
As the UK's first Asian crossover superstar, Sean has already
tasted chart success with the slick anthem Dance With You
(Nachna Tere Naal). But what makes Jay Sean
such an exciting musical proposition is that as a UK born
and bred artist his unique appeal is that he fuses 'Desi'
rhythms with a credible R&B sensibility to produce a thoroughly
authentic sound.
His first love, music, Jay Sean’s story begins more
than a decade ago in Hounslow, west London. "I started
rapping 11 years ago," Sean remembers. "I was in
a group called Compulsive Disorder, it was a punk-rap group.
We got ourselves a few gigs and when DJs such as Choice FM’s
279 played it, we received a lot of local notoriety."
Disillusioned with the UK's cynical rap scene, focussed as
it was, on the colour of his skin rather than the content
of his songs, Sean quickly immersed himself in R&B. "Hip
hop was my first love, but as soon as I got into producing,
R&B became my mistress. As a teenager, I grew up on a
cocktail of music. I was surrounded by a lot of different
influences from black, white and Asian friends.
Jay Sean said:
- If you have some good music, you can make it anywhere.
- I got a phone call from my U.S. rep and he said, ‘Listen,
you know Cash Money? They kinda wanna sign you. They've
been checking your stuff out, all your videos, and songs,
and really like your album. I got the CEO on the line.
- Within seconds, I was speaking to Cash Money head Ronald
"Slim" Williams. I thought joining the Cash Money
family might be perceived as odd by some, but I believe
that is also the reason why the teaming has been so successful..
