Every year on 1st Saturday
of March, Punjabi Society of Los Angeles holds SoCal Bhangra Competition
(Formerly known as CSUN Bhangra Competition). This highly respected
Bhangra Competition is one of the highly ranked competitions in
USA. The competing teams are among the best in North America. Since
last 5 years, the competition has been running successfully with
sold out shows. “Behind the success of this competition, there
is hard work and dedication of team of organizers and volunteers”,
says Raman Chadha the founder and organizer of the competition.
The teams competing hail from all over U.S. and Canada, belonging
to various universities and cultural societies. Every year over
40 teams apply in this highly competitive and cutthroat competition
of which only 12 teams are selected to be part of competition. The
selection is based on various criteria such as performance, ambience,
synchronization, creativity, etc. The teams compete for 1st prize
of $2500 and trophy, 2nd prize of $1500 and trophy and 3rd prize
of $750 and trophy. Also given are $250 and trophy for MVP (Most
Valuable Performer) to one single person with best performance.
This year it’s
on March 1st, 2008 at a prestigious Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles
downtown. This is our 6th Annual Bhangra Competition. We attract
talent from all over United States and Canada. Twelve performing
teams are Bhangra Empire from San Jose, Bruin Bhangra from UCLA,
Cornell Bhangra from Cornell University New York, Da Real Punjabiz
from UC San Diego, Heeray Punjab Deh from San Jose University, Jachdi
Jawani from USC, Jawani Bhangra from Canada, National Bhangra Association
from Los Angeles, PANJ Bhangra from Canada, Rangla Punjab from UC
Irvine, Ronak Punjab Di from UC Davis and Sher Foundation from Riverside.
SoCal Bhangra has established its name as one of the top most Bhangra
Competition in Nation. SoCal Bhangra's past list of artists includes
RDB, Manak-e, Sukhshinder Shinda and Jassi Sidhu.
This year our
performing artist and special guest is famous Malkit Singh of
“Tootak Tootak Tootian” fame. Malkit Singh was recently
awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) and
is listed in the 2000 Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest
selling Bhangra artist of all time. The man with the midas touch
has released over twenty-one albums, and is known for hits like
Hey Jamalo, Gur Nalo Ishq Mitta, Chal Hun, Punjab Mera, Kurri Garam
Jayee, Aaj Bhangra Paoon Nu Jee Karda, Jugni and Mitte Ghane, and
many more.
