NRI, Dr. B R Shetty wins first Abu Dhabi Award

NRI (non-resident Indian) entrepreneurand Well-known philanthropist, sports promoter and Managing Director & CEO of NMC, Bavaguttu Raghuram Shetty has been bestowed with first-ever, prestigious 'Abu Dhabi Award - 2005'.

The award was presented to Shetty on Monday December 5 evening by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan at a glittering ceremony held in the Emirates Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi.

This award has been given in the memory of late Shaikh Zayed under the guidance and auspices of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan,the Crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

Shetty has been chosen for this award on the following criteria:

He has demonstrated determination to help others despite great obstacles
He has been regularly donating his/her time, thoughts and talents to help those around them.
He has left a mark on the community.

Shetty says:

“”A humbling experience engulfs me as I reminisce thru the last three decades of Abu Dhabi’s meteoric rise from a desert to an Oasis. The visionary and benevolent leadership of our founding President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan laid the foundation for many of us impacting positively on the lives of people. My personal achievement is the love and faith reposed in me by the people of UAE. From a one room clinic to being the largest healthcare provider in the region is a tribute to the sincerity of every member of the NMC family.

This award is special because the people of UAE have unanimously considered me befitting this honor and the Ruling family has recognized my contribution to this great Nation. Healthcare remains at the core of my heart. I wish to reiterate that my efforts to provide succor to the needy shall be further enhanced and till my last breath, I shall continue to serve mankind with zeal and fervor.”

The U.S. India Friendship Society, Chicago presented Dr. B.R. Shetty, Managing Director & CEO, NMC with The Distinguished Entrepreneur Award on 29th November 2005 , “ in recognition of his exemplary leadership in business and for exemplifying the noble ideals of humanitarian service”

  • Georgia State University confers doctorate on B. R. Shetty

    Georgia State University of Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America has conferred the highest academic degree, a doctorate on B. R. Shetty, MD and CEO of NMC. The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (D. Litt.) has been conferred ‘in recognition of his noble service to humanity.’ The honour which was conferred by the University on 13 January, 2005 will add to the lustre of the many accolades already received by Shetty in recognition of his achievement in various spheres of activities.

    Philips Medical Systems CEO Tom Egelund presented the Philips Pioneer Award to B.R. Shetty during a ceremony at the Philips stand at the Arab Health 2004 Congress in Dubai. Philips Medical Systems Middle East Regional Director Ian Lauritzen praised B R Shetty , Managing Director and CEO , NMC and said Shetty had worked ’tirelessly to provide residents of the UAE with the best possible hospital care and services’.

  • Arab Health Magazine Award

    Constantin Petridis, Managing Partner, Pharmaserve FZE awarded the Specialist Achievement Award for Pharma to B.R. Shetty, Managing Director and CEO , NMC. Also present at the occasion was Prof. Joel J. Nobel, MD, Founder and President Emeritus, ECRI and Chairman of the Awards Jury .


    Other major awards received by B R Shetty:

    1998 Received Award for Life Time Achievement for dedicated advancement of the cause of Pharmacists and Pharmacies in the Arab World on the Occasion of the historic joint event of the 17th Asian Congress of Pharmaceutical Sciences and 50th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress.
    1998 Received the first ever Indo-Arab Award from the Trivandrum based Indo-Arab Cultural Society for the top Non-Resident Indian for his unstinted support to humane cause.
    1998 Received "Man Patra" from Delhi Karnataka Sangha for social service to humanity.
    1997 The inaugural Rainbow Laurel Award instituted jointly by 3 organisations from the Govt. of Kerala was conferred upon by the Maharaja of Travancore for excellence in business and selfless involvement in community development & philanthropic activities. The selection was done on the basis of an independent survey of over 500 Non Resident Indians across the Middle East.
    1997 The highest social recognition by the Government of Karnataka - Karnataka Rajyotsava Award was awarded for creative and constructive contribution to the development of the State within and outside India.
    1996 Award by the Government of Emirate of Ajman, UAE for service to humanity.
    1995 Award for International Quality for NMC Hospital from Trade Leaders Club, Spain for outstanding international quality.
    1995 Karnataka Malla International Award
    1994 Conferred the Arch of India Gold Award by the NRI Institute, London for the outstanding NRI businessperson.
    1993 Declared Man of the Year (1992) by the NRI Institute London at the 11th International India-NRI Conference held at London. The award, presented by India's High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. L.M.Singhvi, was for outstanding personal achievements and contribution towards the promotion of national integration and international understanding.
    1992 Received the Vikas Ratna Award from International Friendship Society of India for exceptional excellence in the field of chosen endeavour.
    Honoured & Felicitated by the Bunts Sangha, Bombay (1992) to express their gratitude for the noble and disinterested labours in the cause of social service, industry and medical service to the community.

    1966 - 1974 Was elected as Municipal Councillor for Udupi at the tender age of 23. Served the Municipal Council as Vice President for two terms.
