The National Gallery holds the nation's collection
of Western paintings from the 13th to the early 20th
centuries, representing all the major schools of painting
by all the major artists.
Sondhi is a BBC Governor and Chairman of the Heart
of Birmingham NHS Teaching Primary Care Trust. Besides,
he has been Deputy Chairman of the Commission for
Racial Equality, Chairman of the Refugee Employment,
Training and Education Forum and a member of the Ethnic
Minority Advisory Committee of the Judicial Studies
Board.
Ranjit is a Senior Lecturer at the University of
Birmingham, Westhill, where he co-ordinated a new
degree in Race and Ethnic Studies, and also serves
on a number of public bodies.
He was born in India, he has lived, studied and worked
in Birmingham for more than 35 years - he has a BSc
Honours in Physics from the University of Birmingham.
He is married with one son and one daughter
He has worked on a number of community action projects
in inner city areas since 1969. In 1976, he founded
the Asian Resource Centre in Handsworth and worked
there until 1985. He has been Deputy Chairman of the
Commission for Racial Equality, Chairman of the Refugee
Employment, Training and Education Forum and a member
of the Ethnic Minority Advisory Committee of the Judicial
Studies Board.
has also served on the Lord Chancellor's Advisory
Committee on Legal Education and Conduct and on the
DfEE's Task Force on Disability Rights. In 1987, he
was appointed to serve on the Independent Broadcasting
Authority during the period when it was debating new
ways of regulating electronic media. He was invited
to serve on the Radio Authority at a time of rapid
local, regional and national expansion in the commercial
radio industry.
On completing his term of office as a member, he
continued to act as a consultant on matters relating
to the quality and range of radio services for minority
ethnic and language communities until August 1998.
He remains involved in various local projects including
mentoring pupils at risk of school exclusions, services
for the visually impaired, South Asian arts and black
oral history.
He is also a fellow of the Royal Society for Arts
and a member of the Lunar Society in Birmingham.
He has been a Trustee of the National Gallery since
2000 , from 2002, a Trustee of the Barings Foundation
and, from 2003, a Trustee of The Bryant Trust.
Ranjit was appointed Chairman, Heart of Birmingham
Teaching Primary Care Trust in April 2002 following
a re-organisation of the NHS to enable better health
services to be delivered more locally and effectively.
Sondhi was awarded an honorary D.Univ by the University
of Central England in Birmingham in February 2003.
