Nitesh Kumar, an Indian Badminton Playern secured a thrilling victory at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, overcoming Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Daniel Bethell of Great Britain with a close scoreline of 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in the men’s singles badminton SL3 class final on Monday.
The 29-year-old Indian para-badminton player battled through a grueling one hour and 20 minutes to capture the gold medal, marking India’s second consecutive gold in the SL3 category. This follows Pramod Bhagat’s gold-winning performance against the same opponent at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
This win was particularly special for Nitesh as it marked his first triumph over Bethell after nine previous attempts. Bethell, known for his competitive edge, pushed the match to the limit with a strong rally in the third game. However, Nitesh, the world No. 1, demonstrated exceptional mental fortitude, staying calm under pressure to secure the gold on his Paralympic debut.
“Before stepping onto the court, I knew it was going to be a mental game. My strategy was to maintain my composure, which helped me succeed, especially in the first set,” Nitesh Kumar said after his victory. A graduate of the Indian Institutes of Technology, Nitesh’s ability to remain focused under pressure was evident throughout the match.
Nitesh Kumar’s victory is a testament to his perseverance and mental strength, further solidifying India’s standing in international para-badminton. His win at Paris 2024 adds another chapter to the country’s growing Paralympic legacy.
