On Sept 10, Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s Sports Minister, announced cash awards for Indian Paralympians who triumphed at the recent Paris Paralympic Games.
Gold medalists will be awarded INR 75 lakh (USD 89.3k), silver medalists INR 50 lakh (USD 59.5k), and bronze medalists INR 30 lakh (USD 35.7k).
The announcement was made during an event to felicitate the athletes, including those excelling in mixed team events, like archer Sheetal Devi, who will receive INR 22.5 lakh (USD 26.7k).
Mandaviya pledged full support for para-athletes, aiming for more medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics, stating, “India is rising in Paralympics and para sports. From 4 medals in 2016, we’ve grown to 19 in Tokyo and now 29 in Paris.”
India concluded its best-ever Paralympic campaign with 29 medals: seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze, crossing the 50-medal mark in Paralympic history. The athletes returned to India on Tuesday, welcomed by hundreds of jubilant supporters.
