The Sikh community was approached by New York's Mayor office for food packages that were handed out to several distributing federal agencies in the area.
Food cooking kitchens in Gurdwaras were also filmed to show:
The vegetarian food include rice, lentils and dry fruits such as banana and apples.
NRI Gurdwaras also supported the distributing agencies who are providing the food packages to the elderly or people having trouble getting food at supermarkets, specially-abled, homeless.
Jathedar Harpreet Singh, Sri Akal Takht Sahib told NRI Media, “We have requested gurudwaras across the country and the world to especially reach out to the stranded Indian students and provide them meals and shelter, which will give relief to many worried parents back in India."
Guru Nanak Dev Ji, first Guru of Sikhism wanted that everyone is equal. Guru Nanak Dev Ji established the langar because he rejected the caste system where people of different castes do not eat together. Guru Nanak Dev Ji wanted to stress the idea that everyone is equal.Every Gurdwara has a Langar attached to it where food is served to anyone without charge. The term Langar is also used for the communal meal served at the Gurdwaras. The food served in the Langar must be simple, so as to prevent wealthy congregations turning it into a feast that shows off their superiority.Oct 27, 2009. Meals in the langar are vegetarian, and are simple, nourishing and nutritious. They usually consist of rotis (bread), rice, daal (lentils), a vegetable dish, and kheer (dessert).
Langar started in the late 1400s when a young Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj, the first Guru of the Sikhs, was asked to seek a profit by his father in an effort to teach him entrepreneurial skills. As such, young Nanak was given 20 rupees to go and buy something to trade with.
