upset of SGPC
chief Makkar's
statement &
pin-pointing-
"PM
no Sikh"
MANMOHAN SINGH A SIKH - HUMBLE SERVANT OF HUMANITY
Montreal, Canada, April 23, 2009
Dr. Prof. D.S. Chahal
It is strange that SGPC chief , Avtar Singh Makkar, has said:
“Manomohan
Singh is not a Sikh’’ and kept up the tirade as he addressed
an election rally at Hoshiarpur’s Roshan ground in support
of BJP candidate Som Prakash, added, “Any Sikh connected with
the Congress can never be a true Sikh.
Giani Zail Singh, Buta Singh, Darbara Singh and now Amarinder
Singh are all examples in front of you.’’ (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/PM-no-Sikh-says-SGPC-chief-Makkar/articleshow/4437647.cms)
The irony is that SGPC, Amritsar has failed to give a concise and
precise definition of a Sikh as the definition should be. What to
speak of a ‘True Sikh’ there are many ill-defined definitions
of a ‘Sikh’ being used by different institutions of
Sikhi (Sikhism) - (http://www.nriinternet.com/NRIsikhs/SAHAJDHARI_SIKHS/2008/4_Chahal.htm).
I wonder if any institution or individual has any authority to declare
if anybody is a Sikh or not? However, any Sikh organization can
define prerequisite to be a member of that organization.
It looks like that it is an inherited characteristics of the SGPC
to disown the prominent Sikhs who have done tremendous work for
the uplift of the humanity. It is Dr Manmohan Singh who has been
following ‘Nanakian Philosophy’ (Service to the Humanity
is the service to God) since he used his education for the welfare
of humanity (Vidia vichari tan parupkaari - Guru Nanak). Therefore,
Dr Manmohan is a Sikh – humble servant of humanity in the
eyes of Guru Nanak.
First it was Shaheed Bhagat Singh who was disowned and then there
were many to list here and now they have disowned Dr Manmohan Singh,
as a Sikh, who has been acknowledged as man of integrity and of
economic throughout the world, who has put the economy of India
on such a strong footing that all Indians (including the Sikhs)
can walk tall on the surface of the globe.
Let me quote some credentials of Dr Manmohan Singh:
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is widely regarded as the
architect of the country's economic reform program. He is the first
Sikh to hold the top post.
He is also viewed as perhaps the cleanest politician in India -
in contrast, observers note, to several members of his cabinet tainted
by corruption charges. A studious former academic and bureaucrat,
he has kept a low profile as the leader of more than a billion Indians.

One of the more non-political faces of Indian politics, Dr Manmohan
Singh is best known as the "liberator" of Indian economy.
As the Union Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao government (1991-96),
he liberalized the economy to put India on the path of globalization.
He worked as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from
1985 to 1987 and as the Governor of the Reserve Bank for three years
before that. He has also been the Central government's Advisor on
Economic Affairs, besides taking international assignments at the
International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank.
He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1991, and has represented
the Congress there since. In 1999, he contested the Lok Sabha elections
from South Delhi, but lost. He was the Leader of the Opposition
in the Upper House until becoming the Prime Minister of India.
He has won several awards for his work and contribution to society,
including the Padma Vibhushan in 1987, the Euromoney Finance Minister
of the year award in 1993 and the Asiamoney Finance Minister of
the year award in 1993 and 1994.
Singh was born in Gah in West Punjab (now in Pakistan) in September
1932, and studied economics in Chandigarh and later went to Cambridge
& Oxford UK for higher studies. He later taught the subject
at the Punjab University. He has authored a book on Indian export
trends. (http://www.manmohansingh.org/php/showContent.php?linkid=2)
All the Indians, especially the Sikhs, should be proud to have
such a man of integrity who has set an example of CLEAN MAN in Indian
politics.
Party
spokesman Sukhpal Khaira said, “Sikhs supporting the Congress,
and who are in large numbers, do not need a certificate from Makkar.
In fact, it is most outrageous coming from such a highly placed
person and he needs to apologize to the PM and the countrymen, including
Sikhs, who take pride in Manmohan Singh leading the country.’’
