Haryana panel to probe Sikh killings

Chandigarh, March 5, 2011: The Haryana government Saturday set up an inquiry commission to probe the killings of 32 Sikhs, including women and children, in Hondh-Chillar village in the state's Rewari district in the aftermath of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The commission comprises retired judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court T.P. Garg, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said in a statement.

"The commission has been appointed in view of a demand from different sections of the public for an inquiry into various aspects of the incidents of violence," a state government spokesman said here.

As per reports of the survivors, 32 Sikhs, including women and children, were killed by mobs in Hondh-Chillar village, some 350 km from here, Nov 2, 1984 in the aftermath of the killing of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards in New Delhi.

The commission has been asked to submit its report to the state government within six months of holding its first sitting. The headquarters of the commission would be at Hisar, 300 km from here.

Hooda said the commission would also inquire into the sequence of events leading to the killing and aspects like the number of injured and damage caused to property.

The commission would also recommend measures to ensure justice to the victims and their families.......ians/NRIpress.com
