India's Supreme Court has established a national task force to enhance the safety of medical professionals following widespread protests by junior doctors. These demonstrations erupted after the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old medical student at a Kolkata hospital earlier this month. The student, who had been working long hours, was found dead in a hospital lecture hall, prompting fierce national outrage and protests.
The new task force, which will include a panel of doctors, aims to develop comprehensive safety guidelines for healthcare workers across India. The protests, driven by demands for a thorough investigation and improved safety measures, led to a major strike involving about a million doctors—the largest in over a decade. Doctors are calling for better security protocols in hospitals, improved working conditions, and the implementation of the Central Protection Act to safeguard healthcare workers from violence.
The attack highlights longstanding issues with hospital safety, particularly for female doctors. Critics point to inadequate infrastructure and lack of secure rest areas as contributing factors. The Supreme Court's task force will address these concerns by recommending measures such as separate resting rooms for female staff, enhanced lighting, and CCTV surveillance.
The case has reignited memories of the 2012 Delhi gang rape, underscoring ongoing issues with violence against women in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged severe punishments for perpetrators of sexual crimes, but critics argue that progress has been slow despite similar promises in the past.
