3 Indian mens Damanjit Singh, Boota Singh and Raj T Singh have been sent to prison following violent clashes at a sporting event in Derby in 2023.

Police were called to open land in Alvaston in August last year after a kabaddi tournament—an Indian-origin contact sport involving two teams—descended into a serious and pre-arranged confrontation. The disorder involved two rival groups who arrived armed with firearms, knives, swords and bats, despite children being present at the venue. Several people were injured during the incident.

On Friday, Damanjit Singh, Boota Singh and Raj T Singh were sentenced at Derby Crown Court. Their convictions follow the jailing of seven other men in 2024 for their roles in the same outbreak of violence.

According to Derbyshire Police:

  • Video footage showed Boota Singh chasing members of the opposing group during the disturbance. Although he was not carrying a weapon at the time, officers later stopped his vehicle two days after the incident and discovered two machetes in the boot.
  • Police said footage from the event also captured Damanjit Singh and Raj T Singh brandishing large knives during the violence.

Following a trial at Derby Crown Court in November, Boota Singh, 35, of Witham Drive in Derby, was convicted of violent disorder and admitted possessing an offensive weapon.

Damanjit Singh, 35, of Powell Place in Tipton, was found guilty of violent disorder and possession of a bladed article. Raj T Singh, 42, of Patterdale Drive in Huddersfield, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

During sentencing, Boota Singh received a 4 year prison term. Damanjit Singh, who is also subject to automatic deportation, was jailed for 3 years and 4 months. Raj T Singh was sentenced to 3 years and 10 months in prison.
