NRI Sai Keerthana Sriperambuduru, speech and language therapist, has been dismissed from her position in the United Kingdom after concerns emerged about her ability to understand patients and colleagues due to language difficulties.
Sriperambuduru joined the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in October 2023, but issues related to her communication skills surfaced within weeks. Colleagues reported that she struggled to follow conversations with both patients and staff—an issue considered critical given the nature of her role.
she acknowledged that Telugu, not English, was her native language, despite indicating otherwise in her job application. By December, she had begun attending English classes but admitted she continued to face challenges, particularly when patients or parents spoke quickly.
Her responsibilities required a precise understanding of speech patterns, pronunciation, and grammar. However, reports indicated she found it difficult to accurately interpret and document patient interactions during therapy sessions. Her line manager also noted that during the hiring process, she had requested interview questions be typed instead of asked verbally—an unusual request that later raised concerns.
After completing eight months of probation, her employment was terminated in June 2024. She subsequently challenged the decision before the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service, arguing that her English-medium education qualified it as her first language.
The tribunal rejected her claim, clarifying that a “first language” refers to the language primarily used in daily life, not merely the medium of education. The panel concluded that her application was misleading and viewed it as an attempt to conceal her lack of proficiency.
