NRI Parmjit Dhami, a convicted mortgage fraudster from Hornchurch, Essex, has paid £265,000 following civil recovery proceedings by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) over a property in Ilford purchased using a fraudulently obtained mortgage.
The CPS said Dhami obtained a mortgage in 2010 using false information about his business and income, supported by fake payslips. The loan was used to purchase the Ilford property, which was later rented out.
Dhami had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud and received a suspended nine-month prison sentence. He also paid a £146,150 confiscation order relating to another fraudulent mortgage.
The CPS later pursued separate civil recovery proceedings concerning the Ilford property. The High Court ordered Dhami and his wife, who claimed an interest in the property, to pay £265,000, representing 85% of the property's equity. The full amount was paid within the required three-month period.
The CPS said the case demonstrates that criminal convictions and confiscation orders do not necessarily end efforts to recover assets linked to unlawful conduct, and that it will continue using civil recovery powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act where appropriate.
