Sir Oliver Robbins, the Permanent Under-Secretary at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), is visiting India to review advancements in the UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. On June 3, he met with India’s Foreign Secretary, Shri Vikram Misri, in New Delhi as part of the annual UK-India Foreign Office Consultations.

Both sides welcomed the significant progress made across various sectors since the previous meeting held in London. Among the key achievements was the recently announced landmark trade agreement. With economic development at the forefront of the UK Government’s agenda, the two diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to fulfilling the shared vision of their respective prime ministers, aiming to further strengthen cooperation over the next decade.

This year’s consultations also included the launch of the first-ever Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue. This new framework is intended to foster mutual understanding and identify areas for future collaboration, particularly in the fields of advanced technology and defence.

Speaking on the occasion, Sir Oliver Robbins remarked:
“It’s a pleasure to be in India to help deepen one of the UK’s most valued global partnerships. In an increasingly complex world, there is clear ambition on both sides to elevate this relationship. I look forward to working closely with Foreign Secretary Misri to achieve our common goals.”

In addition to the consultations, Sir Oliver is scheduled to meet several senior Indian officials involved in areas such as G20 cooperation and home affairs.

Key Highlights:

  • Sir Oliver Robbins became the Permanent Under-Secretary at the FCDO in January 2025. As the head of the UK Diplomatic Service, he is the chief policy adviser to the Foreign Secretary and oversees diplomatic operations worldwide.
  • On May 6, the UK and India signed a major trade deal that is expected to enhance bilateral trade by £25.5 billion, on top of the current £43 billion, while creating jobs and boosting shared prosperity.
  • These diplomatic engagements align with the UK Government’s “Plan for Change,” which outlines strategic goals to be achieved by the end of the current parliamentary session.
