A nationwide Home Office operation has led to the arrest of 171 delivery riders working illegally across Britain, with 60 detained for removal. Immigration Enforcement teams carried out stops in towns and cities over seven days, arresting riders found without the right to work.
The crackdown comes as the government reports record levels of enforcement, including over 11,000 illegal working visits and 8,000 arrests in the past year. Nearly 50,000 people without legal status have been removed since July 2024.
Border Security Minister Alex Norris also met with Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats to strengthen checks, including random facial recognition to prevent account sharing and improved monitoring of illegal working hotspots.
New laws under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act will extend right-to-work checks to gig economy roles, with employers facing jail terms and fines of up to £60,000 per illegal worker for failing to comply.
As part of Operation Equalize, arrests were made in Solihull, Newham and Norwich, involving riders from China, Bangladesh and India. Authorities say criminal networks are exploiting high street shops to mask illegal activity, and the government has recovered £300 million in criminal assets in the past year.
