Just two days before Gandhi Jayanti, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London was desecrated with offensive anti-India graffiti. The incident, which targeted the plinth of the bronze monument, has sparked outrage and widespread condemnation.
The High Commission of India in London denounced the act, calling it a disgraceful assault on Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence. Authorities in the UK capital confirmed that police have launched an investigation into vandalism.
The Gandhi statue at Tavistock Square holds great symbolic value. Each year on October 2, it becomes the centre of Gandhi Jayanti commemorations, with tributes paid to the leader of India’s freedom struggle. Over time, the square has come to be known as London’s “peace park,” housing memorials such as a cherry tree honouring the victims of Hiroshima and a field maple dedicated to the United Nations’ International Year of Peace in 1986.
