A 41-year-old construction worker, Thirupathi Mohandas, has been sentenced to 13 months in jail after admitting to voyeurism and molestation charges involving a 35-year-old American woman living in a condominium.

According to court documents, Mohandas first noticed the woman on April 29, when he saw her naked through her condo window. Finding her attractive, he decided to see her again the following night.

At around 11.30pm the next day, he parked his lorry nearby, climbed onto the woman’s balcony, and watched her sleep for about half an hour. He then entered her bedroom and touched her toes twice while she slept. Startled, the victim awoke to find Mohandas crouched at the foot of her bed. When she shouted in shock, he fled the scene by climbing down from the balcony.
The woman, frightened and disgusted, immediately sought help from the condominium’s security staff, who contacted the police.

However, just two days later, in the early hours of May 3, Mohandas returned. He once again broke into the woman’s unit, this time standing on the balcony for about three hours while she was awake inside. During this period, he committed a sex act while watching her through the window. When the woman heard a noise and saw his silhouette outside, she again alerted security guards.

Police officers arrested Mohandas before midnight on May 4 as he was loitering near the condominium. He later admitted to intending to see the woman once more.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ernest Chua emphasized the premeditated nature of the offenses and described them as a serious violation of the victim’s privacy. He urged the court to impose a sentence of between 12 and 18 months.

Defense lawyer Ang Boon Yaw, representing Mohandas, said his client was deeply remorseful and had fully cooperated with authorities during the investigation.

During sentencing, District Judge Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz said Mohandas’s actions over three days amounted to a “sustained campaign of harassment” and demonstrated “recalcitrant brazenness and audaciousness.”
