The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has announced the cancellation of $21 million in US taxpayer funds originally earmarked for voter turnout efforts in India. The announcement, made via a tweet on X, was part of a broader review of foreign aid spending.
According to DOGE, the funding was part of a $486 million allocation to the “Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening,” which also included $22 million for Moldova, $29 million for Bangladesh, and $20 million for Nepal, among others. The move has reignited debates about foreign influence in domestic elections and the role of USAID in funding political initiatives abroad.
Meanwhile, Indian economist Sanjeev Sanyal questioned where the allocated funds had been spent, calling USAID “the biggest scam in human history.”
The Indian government and the Election Commission of India have yet to respond to the funding withdrawal. DOGE, established under the second Trump administration, continues to implement cost-cutting measures across government agencies, drawing both praise and criticism.
