Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, speaking Thursday evening at the Al Smith dinner, where every four years the presidential nominees of both parties speak.

“I get it, you wanted an Indian woman, but Elizabeth Warren failed her DNA test,” Haley cracked during her keynote address for the charity dinner. “Actually, when the president found out that I was Indian-American, he asked me if I was from the same tribe as Elizabeth Warren.”

“When I saw the mayor backstage, I told him I was really glad to be here. He said, ‘Me too.’ Mayor, it’s not a good idea for a man to ever use that phrase.”

From her speech, it is clear that she is proud of the Trump administration and honored to have been an active arm of the machinery that carried out its agenda. She thinks the legacy she’s leaving behind is the kind of thing you can laugh off. The wealthy and powerful people at the tables behind her—comedians, television personalities, former public officials—clearly agreed. It was all smiles from everyone that night.

Haley embraced the fierce Republican hostility towards the United Nations and is wielding defense of Israel as the sword with which she will slay the organization.

She isn’t your standard white Republican male but the daughter of NRI immigrants who tasted discrimination and abuse during her childhood. She is a true conservative, perhaps, but one who has weaned herself off the rigid ideology she embraced when she started out in politics.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), instead of telling the nation that political opponents are not enemies, is now imitating Trump and accusing Democrats and liberals of being a mob.
