Dr. Prakash Narain new Mayor Pro Tem of Cypress, California

In a unanimous vote of the five-member City Council, Prakash Narain, M.D. and Doug Bailey became the new Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor, respectively, for the city of Cypress, California. The decision was made at the council meeting of December 8, 2008, at the Cypress City Council Chambers. Narain and Bailey will hold these positions for one-year terms that will continue until December 2009. Todd Seymore and Leroy Mills held these positions in 2008.

Dr. Narain and Mr. Bailey assumed their new duties immediately. Both were elected to the Cypress City Council in November 2006 and have been very active in the community for many years. Narain said he was humbled and honored to serve the residents of Cypress in his new role as Mayor Pro Tem for 2009.

Cypress, a city of about 50,000 people, is located in Orange County in southern California. Its population is 65% Caucasian and 21% Asian. South Asians comprise only 0.2% of the residents.

Dr. Prakash Narain’s community involvement includes serving 8 years on the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission and as its chairman for 3 years. He became a Council Member in his first attempt at public office.

Prakash Narain is a physician with a specialization in internal medicine and geriatrics. He has been in medical practice at Leisure World in Seal Beach, California for 21 years. While serving his four-year term as a City Council Member, he continues his medical practice and his role as Medical Director of the Leisure World Health Care Center. He is also currently Chairman of the Governing Board of Directors of Los Alamitos Medical Center in Los Alamitos, California.

Prakash grew up in Bihar, India, attended Darbhanga Medical College, and immigrated to the United States in 1980. He completed his medical residency in internal medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chicago and his fellowship training in geriatrics at UCLA Medical Center and the VA Westwood Hospital in Los Angeles. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Narain and his wife, Veena, have been married 28 years and have lived in Cypress for the last 21 years. Veena was the campaign manager for Dr. Narain’s election in 2006. Their son, Sachin, a graduate of UCLA, is currently a 3rd year medical student at Albany Medical College, in Albany, New York. Their daughter, Seema, an accomplished Kathak dancer, is a senior at UCLA studying Business Economics.
