NRI Raja Krishnamoorthi, Congressman, (D-IL) has introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month, recognizing the rich history, culture, and contributions of Tamil-speaking communities. Tamil, one of the world's oldest languages, is spoken by over 80 million people globally, including approximately 360,000 Americans.

The timing of the resolution aligns with Pongal, a major Tamil harvest festival celebrated in mid-January. Pongal is a time of gratitude, prosperity, and community, marked by gatherings of family, friends, and loved ones.

“As a Tamil American, I am honored to introduce this bipartisan resolution celebrating Tamil language, heritage, and culture both here in the United States and around the globe,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “America thrives as a mosaic of languages, traditions, and cultures. It is my sincere hope that this resolution will bring greater awareness to the vibrant Tamil culture and the remarkable contributions of over 350,000 Tamil Americans. I urge my colleagues in Congress to swiftly adopt this resolution, recognizing the invaluable impact of Tamil Americans in our communities.”

Organizations representing Tamil Americans have warmly welcomed this resolution.
The Tamil Americans United PAC expressed their gratitude: “We deeply appreciate Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and other members of Congress for introducing this significant legislation. It highlights the ancient history of the Tamil people and their remarkable contributions to modern society. We encourage Tamil Americans to actively engage in supporting the resolution’s passage.”

The Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA) echoed this sentiment: “We are proud to support Rep. Krishnamoorthi’s resolution to establish Tamil Language and Heritage Month. Tamil Americans have much to offer this country, and showcasing our language and culture will enable us to share our heritage with fellow citizens meaningfully.”

Similarly, the U.S. Tamil Action Group (USTAG) praised the resolution, saying, “We thank Congressman Krishnamoorthi for leading this effort to recognize January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month. Tamil Americans take pride in our ancient language, traditions, and culture and know our heritage enriches America’s diversity.”

People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL) also expressed appreciation: “This resolution underscores the Tamil community's contributions to the United States across generations. By highlighting Tamil history and culture, it strengthens the diversity that defines and enriches American society.”

This initiative celebrates the Tamil community’s enduring legacy while highlighting its role in shaping a multicultural America. The resolution stands as a call to honor and recognize the vibrant history and achievements of Tamil Americans.
