With just over three months remaining before the presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris has inherited a weakened Democratic coalition. This year, polls reveal significant drops in support among young, Black, and Hispanic voters for President Joe Biden. Swing voters are also reconsidering Trump more favorably, and for the first time in years, more Americans identify as Republican rather than Democrat.
To secure a win, Harris must work to reassemble a fragmented Democratic base. She needs to regain the enthusiasm of young, Black, and Hispanic voters while maintaining the support of moderate anti-Trump voters who were crucial in 2020. Although early polls indicate some progress for Harris compared to Biden’s performance, she still lags behind traditional Democratic benchmarks. To capture the Electoral College, she will need to achieve further gains in the coming months.
Historically, Democrats have relied on strong support from young, Black, and Hispanic voters. However, Biden’s poor performance among these groups this year, compared to past Democratic successes, has raised concerns. Early data on Harris’s appeal to these demographics is mixed. While some polls show she is performing better than Biden, others indicate limited improvement. Understanding why Biden struggled could be key for Harris in addressing these issues effectively.
NRI Harris also faces the task of reassuring older white working-class voters, who have been a crucial part of the Democratic success in the Trump era. This group was instrumental for Biden in 2020 and has continued to support Democrats in lower-turnout elections. Harris's current polling shows she does not match Biden's past support levels among these voters, and her progressive record may be contributing to this challenge. Her campaign’s strategy of emphasizing her prosecutorial experience and Trump’s legal troubles while moderating her earlier positions on issues like fracking and Medicare for All might help bridge this gap. However, balancing these efforts with energizing younger and more progressive voters remains a delicate task.
The effectiveness of Harris’s campaign strategy will be crucial in determining whether she can rebuild and strengthen the Democratic coalition, navigate the challenges ahead, and secure victory in the upcoming election.
