CNN Poll: NRI Kamala Harris, Vice President of United States
Seen as Stronger Candidate Than Biden for 2024

According to a recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS, three-quarters of American voters think the Democratic Party would have a stronger chance of winning the presidency in 2024 with a nominee other than President Joe Biden. Biden's approval rating has also reached a new low after an underwhelming performance in the first debate of the presidential campaign.

In a hypothetical matchup, former President Donald Trump leads Biden by 6 points, 49% to 43%, consistent with CNN's April poll and previous trends from last fall. While both candidates have consolidated support within their own parties, independents are increasingly reluctant to support either candidate.

Vice President Kamala Harris fares slightly better against Trump in a hypothetical scenario, with 47% of voters backing Trump and 45% Harris. Harris's stronger showing compared to Biden is attributed to greater support from women and independents.

Other potential Democratic candidates, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, also trail Trump, with their support levels similar to Biden's.

Despite Biden's campaign maintaining he will not drop out, some Democratic insiders are privately discussing the possibility of replacing him, though this would be both logistically difficult and politically risky. Biden's support among Democratic voters has slightly increased, while Trump retains strong backing from Republicans and a significant lead among independents.

Biden's approval rating has fallen to 36%, with a majority of Americans viewing him unfavorably. Harris and other potential Democratic replacements are less disliked but also less known. Trump's image remains largely unchanged, with many voters holding unfavorable views of both candidates.

Voters have concerns about Biden's handling of key issues and his physical and mental abilities, while Trump is more trusted on the economy, immigration, and foreign policy. Biden is favored on issues like abortion and health care but faces challenges in uniting the country.

The poll highlights the difficulty both Biden and Trump face in winning over persuadable voters, with a significant portion of the electorate remaining undecided or unfavorable towards both candidates. The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS among a random national sample of 1,274 adults, including 1,045 registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
