In a revealing interview on CBS’s "60 Minutes," Vice President Kamala Harris shared that she is a long-time gun owner, possessing a Glock which she has used at a shooting range. Harris explained her reason for owning a firearm, citing personal safety, a stance she has previously acknowledged during her tenure as a U.S. Senator and during her 2020 presidential campaign.
"I own a gun for probably the same reason many people do — for personal safety," Harris stated during the interview with Bill Whitaker. She mentioned that her firearm had been securely stored since she acquired it several years ago.
During a September 19th campaign event with Oprah Winfrey, Harris made light of the subject, joking, "If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot."
Harris' remarks come amidst ongoing debates about gun ownership, especially after former President Donald Trump faced legal troubles that affected his own gun license. Earlier this year, following his indictment on multiple felony counts, Trump’s concealed carry permit in New York was suspended as part of the state’s protocol regarding gun licenses after criminal convictions. While the details of Trump's specific firearm licenses remain confidential, his case underscores the public scrutiny surrounding gun ownership by political figures.
