During a CNN town hall in Pennsylvania, Vice President Kamala Harris took a strong stance against former President Donald Trump, calling him a “fascist” and warning that he poses a significant threat to American democracy. Harris’ comments aligned with a recent statement from John Kelly, Trump’s former chief of staff, who described Trump as fitting “the general definition of a fascist.”
Kelly, a retired Marine general, revealed that Trump privately expressed admiration for dictators and desired generals as loyal as Hitler’s. Harris noted that Kelly’s remarks should be seen as a critical warning to the American public just weeks before Election Day. She stressed the importance of taking these concerns seriously, especially given they come from those who have directly observed Trump’s behavior in office.
When CNN’s Anderson Cooper asked Harris if she agreed with Kelly’s assessment, she firmly responded, “Yes, I do.” This marks Harris’s first public use of the term “fascist” in reference to Trump, indicating her belief that his return to office could endanger democratic principles. Harris called for voters to reject authoritarianism and seek a leader who respects democratic processes rather than admires autocratic figures.
Trump, responding to Harris’s comments on social media, claimed she was exaggerating out of desperation and falsely suggested she directly compared him to Hitler. Harris clarified her critique, noting that her concerns center on Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and admiration for dictators, not any direct comparison.
With Election Day approaching and polls showing a close race, Harris emphasized that her campaign, backed by both Democratic and Republican figures such as former Rep. Liz Cheney, is focused on ensuring leadership that values democratic ideals. Meanwhile, Trump continues to rally supporters with his familiar points on immigration, crime, and criticism of political opponents.
As the campaign intensifies, Harris’s remarks highlight the deep ideological divide shaping the 2024 election, with each side emphasizing the importance of safeguarding America's future leadership.
