Joe Biden Drops Out of Presidential Race and Endorses

Facing mounting pressure from within his own party, President Biden announced he would end his campaign and support Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Harris confirmed her intent to seek the nomination, stating, “Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”
Former California U.S. Senator Kamala Harris emerges as the likely Democratic presidential candidate following Joe Biden’s announcement on Sunday to withdraw from the race, ending weeks of speculation about his intentions.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, considered by some analysts as a potential presidential candidate due to his efforts to increase his national presence, including a debate with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, endorsed Harris yesterday. Newsom, along with other prominent Democrats and Biden himself, praised Harris as “tough, fearless, and tenacious.”
Biden’s announcement followed his recent debate performance and numerous appeals from Democrats, both privately and publicly, to exit the race.
The Associated Press reports that Biden’s senior staff was informed of the upcoming announcement at 1:45 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, with the statement released to the media a minute later at 1:46 p.m. Despite previous insistence that he would remain in the race, Biden’s decision came while he was recovering at home after testing positive for COVID-19 last week.
