California’s Yuba City names first Sikh woman as mayor

NRI Preet Didbal Vice Mayor, will be sworn in as Yuba City’s mayor in next City Council meeting, making her the first Sikh woman to hold the highest elected office in US History. City council members rotate into the mayor and vice mayor positions every year based on vote count.

“I'm speechless, so humbling and had American Dream, said Preet. “ I worked along with my parents in the farming field  of peaches and  prunes. My parents worked very, very hard to give us the better life that we have today.”

She further said, “As a council member, I get approached by very young women all the time: How did you do it? How did you talk to your parents? How did you break the barriers?. Don't second-guess yourself. If there's something in your gut telling you to do something, follow your heart.”

My father said, "We’ve raised you as if you were our son. Go out and do what you want to do."
Preet is a single parent. She has 18 years old daughter and going her first year of college.

Her dad passed away recently. Her mom still lives independently, but she takes care of her.

Preet Didbal sworn in by her daughter as part of the Yuba City ceremony for new council members

 NRI  Preet Didbal, 46, Internal Audits Manager  at California Correctional Health Care, was elected a city council member and sworn in by her daughter as part of the Yuba City ceremony for new council members Tuesday, Dec. Nov 02, 2014. She has served on the Yuba City Planning Commission for eight years.

 “My parents raise us (four sisters) like sons and give us  the strength to go out and do what  we want,” she told local media.. “We worked in the fields here in farms  who just raised ourselves up. I was one of the first out of our family to go to college.”

This is a big day," Didbal told KCRA 3, her eyes filled with tears. "It is very emotional … I still can’t believe it."

“From where I was standing, I see all these men and then I see Preet," said 15-year-old Ravina Sidhu. "And it’s wonderful, because she’s telling you to go for it."
"I do admire her," 11-year-old Meneek Sidhu said. "I think she’ll be a great councilwoman and good for our community."

Didbal holds an associate degree in nutrition, a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s in public administration

 Children are the most valuable asset our community has and should be supported in a more meaningful way that includes the child's health, education, social skills, family relationship, recreational needs, safety, housing and employment opportunities,” saidDidbal. “Invest in our children wisely and we will see a brighter future…”

In Yuba County, Sikh farmers account for: 95% of the peach farming, 60% prune farming and 25% almonds & walnut

NRI Kashmir (Kash) Gill is the current mayor of Yuba City,California. This is Gill's second term as Mayor (previously. Gill is the first Sikh-Elected Mayor in the United States. Council member Kash Gill was elected to the City Council in November 2006 and in 2012. Councilmember Gill has been a farmer for more than 20 years, farming peaches, prunes and walnuts. He is also a businessman, working in Community Banking for 25 years

She is a Manager in the Policy and Risk Management Branch in Correctional Health Care Services at the California Department of Corrections.
