NRI Rohit Chopra has been fired as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) by President Donald Trump. Chopra, known for his tougher regulations on banks and credit card companies, confirmed his departure in X, saying, “My tenure as CFPB director is over.”
Appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2021, Chopra led efforts to limit credit card late fees and overdraft charges while expanding access to consumer financial data. His tenure drew strong opposition from Republican lawmakers and financial institutions, leading to his removal under a 2020 Supreme Court ruling that allows presidents to fire CFPB directors.
Senator Elizabeth Warren praised Chopra’s work in consumer protection, warning against attempts to weaken the CFPB. With their departure, the agency is expected to move towards a more business-friendly approach under new leadership.
