NRI Zohran Mamdani, 33, New York State Assemblyman and Democratic Socialist, secured a stunning victory in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, upending former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a historic upset.
Mamdani led with 44% of first-choice votes to Cuomo’s 36%, according to results with 90% of ballots counted — prompting an early concession from Cuomo.
With ranked-choice voting in play, Mamdani is confidently headed toward becoming the party’s nominee.
At a victory rally in Queens, Mamdani said, "We have given our city permission to believe again," promising to be "a mayor for every New Yorker".
His campaign, championed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez, focused on progressive reforms like rent freezes, free bus service, city-owned grocery stores, childcare, and affordable housing.
This breakthrough marks different firsts: Mamdani would become New York’s first Muslim, first South Asian, first millennial, and first Democratic Socialist mayor.
Though Cuomo leaves the Democratic line, he may run independently in November — joined by incumbent Mayor Eric Adams (now running independently) and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
In a city often defined by big-money and establishment politics, Mamdani’s grassroots surge signifies a generational and ideological shift — one grounded in progressive hope and diverse representation
