10 NRIs, most of them are Democrats, have won local and state-level elections held in several parts of the country, reflecting the growing political empowerment of the ethnic community that constitutes a little over one per cent of the US population.

Ghazala Hashmi was re-elected to the State Senate

Senator Hashmi moved to the U.S. as a young girl with her family, over fifty years ago. She was raised in a small town in Georgia and saw firsthand how community-building and open dialogue can bridge cultural and socioeconomic divisions, uniting people from all walks of life.

  • In Virginia, Hyderabad-born Ghazala Hashmi was re-elected to the State Senate for a third consecutive term. She was the first-ever Indian-American woman and a Muslim to be elected to the Virginia State legislation.

Ghazala grew up in that small college town, at a time when public schools were being desegregated. She saw firsthand how communities can be built and dialogue promoted through intentional efforts to bridge cultural, racial, and socioeconomic divisions. Suhas Subramanyam was re-elected to the Virginia State Senate

Subramanyam was born in Houston, Texas to Indian parents from Bengaluru, India who later came to the United States through Dulles Airport in Virginia and eventually settled in Houston, Texas. He attended Clear Lake High School and earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Tulane University.

Kannan Srinivasanelected to the Virginia House of Delegates

Business leader Kannan Srinivasan, who immigrated from India in the 90s, was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from the India-American dominated Loudon County area. All three winners in Virginia are from the Democratic party as are the three winners from New Jersey.

Balvir Singh is a teacher and Democratic politician from Burlington Township, New Jersey who has served on the Burlington County Board of County Commissioners since 2018.Singh is the first Asian American to win a countywide election in Burlington County and the first Sikh American to win a countywide election in New Jersey.

Arunan Arulampalam elected as the Mayor of Hartford in Connecticut.

Arulampalam is from a Tamil family. His parents fled Sri Lanka in July 1983, at the start of the Sri Lankan Civil War.They moved to England, where they married, and settled in Zimbabwe. Arunan was born in Bulawayo in 1985. The family relocated to California. Arulampalam earned his bachelor's degree from Emory University and earned his law degree from Quinnipiac University School of Law.
