NRI minister Alok Sharma retained in
UK PM Liz Truss' new cabinet

Agra-born Alok Sharma worked in the corporate sector before trying his luck in politics and getting elected to Parliament in 2010. He held UK ministerial positions in the Business, Trade, Housing, and Employment departments in the past.

He retained his climate action job as the COP26 President in the cabinet of the newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Liz Truss.

The Agra-born Alok Sharma (55) remains at the climate action post of president of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26. The decision to extend another term for Sharma comes after seeing his commendable performance in handling COP26 Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, last year.

Alok Sharma, MP, makes India his first official visit since being appointed UK Minister in Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet for Asia, travelling to Delhi today and then Mumbai after just a week in his new role.

Mr Sharma will hold talks with Indian government ministers, senior officials and business leaders to make clear that Britain is open for business and that India and the UK share a dynamic future on the world stage.

Theresa May became the UK's Prime Minister on July 13 2016. Following David Cameron's resignation due to the result of the EU referendum, Theresa May won the Conservative party leadership race after Andrea Leadsom dropped out on July 11, 2016. Theresa served as Home Secretary from May 2010 until July 2016. She was elected Conservative MP for Maidenhead in May 1997.

As modern and diverse democracies, our two countries have a natural affinity and enjoy a genuinely strategic partnership that we want to take to the next level. Our existing bonds in security and defence, business, innovation, education and culture are stronger than ever.

Mr Sharma will also meet business and finance leaders to discuss the UK’s strengths, including in financial services, ‘Smart Cities’ and sustainable energy.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, NATO and the G7, the UK is a truly global player. As a long standing friend of India, we are a great fit with India’s reform programme and, as partners in the G20 and Commonwealth, our growing collaboration will see both our nations prosper in the world.

Indian-origin MP appointed junior minister in Theresa May's cabinet
 
London, July 19, 2016 : Indian-origin MP Alok Sharma has been appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with responsibility for Asia and the Pacific in Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet.

Following his appointment, the MP for Reading West said: "I am honoured to have been appointed by the Prime Minister as Minister for Asia & the Pacific, hugely important parts of the world that are crucial for the UK’s prosperity and security.

"Britain is a truly great country and I will work tirelessly to ensure we continue to thrive and prosper on the world stage.

"I look forward to working closely with my new colleagues and my counterparts across Asia & the Pacific, with a particular focus on strengthening commercial ties, increasing investment opportunities in both directions and promoting human rights in the region," he said, according to a British High Commission statement.

Sharma will be reporting to the former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, now the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs......IANS

Agra-born Alok Sharma elected British MP, city celebrates

Agra, May 9, 2010:

It's celebration time in the city of Taj as one of their very own has registered a thumping victory in the UK parliamentary elections. Agra-born Alok Sharma, a Conservative Party candidate, recorded a most impressive swing from Labour to the Tories in Reading West in Berkshire.

Sharma won the seat with a 6,004 majority over Labour's Naz Sarkar.

At the ancestral Sharmas home in Kothi Meena Bazar area, a prayer ceremony was held after which sweets were distributed.

Sharma's cousin Vishwanath, a deputy station master at the Raja ki Mandi railway station, told IANS: "In the slightly racial British society, it's not a joke getting a Conservative Party ticket and doing so well in the polls... getting a record swing."

"Though it's been a long time since Alok and family left Agra to settle in the UK, they keep visiting us. Alok last visited us in December. He is taking a lot of interest in the family's charitable hospital coming up in our ancestral village in Aligarh."

Vishwanath revealed that Alok is a very good writer as well.

Cousin Vandana Pathak said: "We are indeed proud of Alok. When Indians do well abroad, it really is a matter of great satisfaction and pride for us all."

Alok's aunt Shankuntala fondly recalled that "Alok was naughty and when he returned from school he used to play a lots of pranks."

Prem Sharma, Alok's father, is a doctor and is suffering from heart ailment, the family members here informed.

Born Sep 7, 1967, Alok studied at Normal School and then at Welham in Dehradun before leaving with his parents for London in 1972. Alok's wife is from Sweden and he has two daughters, according to his relatives in Agra.

Alok is currently a governor of a local primary school in Reading and a keen supporter of local charities. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society for the advancement of the Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce which, amongst its objectives, supports environmental initiatives which move us towards a zero-waste society.

Previously, he served as a chairman of the political think tank Bow Group's economic affairs committee.

Alok, a qualified chartered accountant, has a range of work experience from working on a factory production line, being a company auditor, tutoring university students, running a business and advising companies.
