Marsha
Singh, MP for Yorkshire's Bradford,
under fire for indecent proposal
LONDON, March 14 2005
While the world media was busy tracking England
debate its controversial anti-terrorist law
in the House of Commons, an Indian-born Labour
MP was making news of different kind_in the
smoking room.
Marsha Singh, MP for Yorkshire's Bradford
That's where Marsha Singh, MP for Yorkshire's
Bradford, allegedly asked a married female colleague
to sleep with him for money while in an inebriated
condition.
Singh is accused of having propositioned Jane
Griffiths, also from Labour, in the bar on the
same evening of the marathon all-night debate
on anti-terrorist laws.
As the debate dragged late into the night,
many MPs sought refreshment in the bar and Singh,
also a former trade unionist, was drinking with
colleagues in the Commons' Smoking Room.
As he was staggering in the room and colleagues
attempted to curb him, he is said to have shouted
a number of expletives: ``I don't want a f*****g
fight, I want a s**g.'' He then apparently turned
to Griffiths, the Labour MP for Reading, and
said: ``I'll come with you for a s**g. How much
do you charge?''
Griffiths, featured on the front page of 'The
Mail on Sunday', said: ``It is a disgraceful
thing to say. It is unlike Marsha. When people
have too much to drink, they do things they
regret.''
A Sikh who does not wear a turban, Singh has
largely avoided controversy in his career.
Another female Labour MP, Helen Clark, who
represents Peterborough, was also present at
the time and said: ``I am sure Marsha will regret
it. It is utterly out of character. This is
bad behaviour wherever it happens. But it did
happen.''
A Labour Whip was reportedly requested to come
in and restrain Singh who has not as yet given
a statement about the incident.
Singh, 50, is a widower whose wife, Sital,
passed away in 2001. He has two children. The
Punjab-born MP was raised in Yorkshire and worked
with the National Health Service before winning
a seat in the 1997 general election.
With a large number of Muslims in his constituency,
Singh has also been a vocal critic of the Iraq
war.
