In a proud moment for the NRI community in the United Kingdom, Tushar Kumar, 23, has been elected as one of the youngest mayors in the UK. His appointment has drawn attention across the country and among overseas Indian communities for his remarkable achievement at such a young age.

Tushar Kumar was chosen to serve as mayor in his British town after years of active involvement in community service, youth leadership, and local public initiatives. Known for his dedication and strong connection with local residents, he has become a symbol of youth empowerment and diversity in British politics.

Tushar Kumar has inspired many young people through his journey from community volunteer work to holding one of the most respected civic positions in the town. Supporters describe him as hardworking, approachable, and committed to bringing positive change for residents.

  • Tushar Kumar Born in Rohtak, Haryana, India, his family's ancestral village is Rohna in the Sonipat district.
  • Migration: Imigrated to the United Kingdom with his parents in 2013 at the age of 10.
  • Parents: His father, Sunil Dahiya, is a local businessman. His mother, Parveen Rani, made concurrent political history by being elected the first Indian-origin Mayor of the neighbouring Hertsmere Borough Council on May 20, 2026.
  • Cultural Ties: Kumar remains heavily connected to his Indian heritage. He runs free Hindi language classes for British Indian children through his mother's charity, the Hindi Shiksha Parishad. He also pioneered Elstree and Borehamwood’s first official, now-annual, Diwali celebration.
  • Secondary Schooling: Achieved an exceptional academic record, completing 21 GCSEs and 5 A-levels.
  • Higher Education: Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from King's College London. He actively participated in the university’s Civic Leadership Academy and the University Officers' Training Corps.
  • Future Studies: Enrolled to begin a Master’s degree in Political Economy at University College London (UCL) in September 2026.
  • Grassroots Entry: Entered local politics as a student volunteer. He won his first seat as a Labour Party town councillor in 2023 at the age of 20.
