NRI Ruby Sahota: Canadian MP and Former Cabinet Minister

NRI Ruby Sahota has narrowly secured victory in the newly formed federal riding of
Brampton North—Caledon after a closely contested election night. With all
175 polls reporting, Sahota received 22,682 votes (48.9%), edging out
Conservative challenger Amandeep Judge, who garnered 22,032 votes (47.5%).
The result remained uncertain until the early hours of Tuesday morning, with
the final outcome hinging on one of the last polls to report.
Sahota, who previously represented Brampton North since 2015, brings
significant parliamentary experience to the new riding. She has held key roles
in the Liberal government, including Minister of Democratic Institutions,
Minister for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario,
and Chief Government Whip.
During the campaign, Sahota pledged to advocate for affordable housing and a
stronger public health care system. The new riding of Brampton
North—Caledon is home to approximately 106,762 residents.
New Democrat Ruby Zaman and People’s Party candidate Sat Anand finished
with 985 and 633 votes, respectively.
About Ruby Sahota
- Ruby Sahota, born on June 22, 1979, is a Canadian lawyer and Liberal Member of Parliament for Brampton North since 2015.
- The daughter of Indian Punjabi immigrants, she was raised in Brampton, Ontario, and has deep ties to the Sikh community through her father, a former Chairman of the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council.
- Sahota holds a degree in Political Science and Peace Studies from McMaster University and a law degree from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. Before entering politics, she practiced commercial litigation in the U.S.
Elected during the 2015 federal election, Sahota has served on key
- parliamentary committees and was elected Chair of the Federal Liberal Ontario Caucus in 2017. In 2024, she was appointed Chief Government Whip and later served as Minister of Democratic Institutions and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
Though not included in the 30th Canadian Ministry, Sahota remains a respected voice in Parliament. She lives in Brampton with her husband, Dr. Tejinder Sahota, and their son, Nihal.
