Elizabeth May – A Pioneering Voice in Canadian Politics and Environmental Advocacy
Elizabeth May is currently the Co-Leader of the Green Party of Canada with Jonathan Pedneault.
She is a prominent Canadian politician, environmentalist, author, and lawyer, best known as the long-time leader and public face of the Green Party of Canada. A tireless advocate for climate action and democratic reform, she has built a political career grounded in principles, persistence, and a deep commitment to public service.
Born on June 9, 1954, in Hartford, Connecticut, May moved with her family to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in the early 1970s. It was there that her passion for nature and environmental justice truly took root. She studied at Dalhousie Law School and later became an attorney, focusing her career on public interest law, particularly related to environmental and Indigenous issues.
May gained national recognition in the 1980s and 1990s through her work with the Sierra Club of Canada, where she served as Executive Director for nearly two decades. Her leadership helped bring environmental concerns to the forefront of Canadian political discourse, long before climate change became a mainstream issue.
In 2006, May was elected leader of the Green Party of Canada, becoming the first woman to lead the party and quickly transforming it into a more recognizable and credible force in federal politics. Her breakthrough came in 2011 when she was elected Member of Parliament for Saanich–Gulf Islands in British Columbia, making her the first Green MP in Canadian history. Her election was a major milestone, symbolizing a shift in public awareness and support for environmental politics.
May is widely respected across party lines for her intellect, integrity, and dedication to parliamentary democracy. She has consistently advocated for issues such as climate justice, electoral reform, Indigenous rights, and transparent governance. As a parliamentarian, she is known for her encyclopedic understanding of legislative processes and has been a consistent voice for civility and cooperation in a polarized political climate.
In 2019, May stepped down as leader of the Green Party but remained active in its leadership, later returning in 2022 as co-leader alongside Jonathan Pedneault in a renewed push to strengthen the party’s national presence.
Beyond politics, May is also a prolific writer, having authored several books on environmental policy and Canadian democracy. Her work continues to inspire new generations of activists, politicians, and citizens committed to a greener and fairer Canada.
