NRI Pritam Singh, Workers’ Party (WP) chief, a non-practising lawyer, was struck off the rolls on Aug 13 over his criminal conviction for lying to a parliamentary committee.

Singh did not contest the application brought by the Law Society of Singapore for him to be struck off.

NRI Pritam Singh, Secretary-General of the Workers’ Party and Leader of the Opposition in Singapore’s Parliament, has been convicted of lying to the parliamentary Committee of Privileges. He now has 14 days to appeal after sentencing.

This is Singapore’s first prosecution under the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act. Singh faces up to three years in jail and a fine of SGD 7,000 for each of the two charges.

The court ruled that Singh "wilfully" misled the committee regarding false claims made by former MP Raeesah Khan. Despite Singh’s testimony that he had advised Khan to correct her statement, the judge found that he had instead supported maintaining the lie.

Witness testimonies and evidence indicated Singh did not take steps to rectify the falsehood in Parliament, strengthening the prosecution’s case.
