Trump Faces Double Legal Setback: Deportation Plan Halted, Tariffs Ruled Illegal
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been dealt two major legal blows in quick succession. First, a federal judge blocked the White House’s attempt to accelerate deportations. Soon after, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit struck down most of Trump’s sweeping tariff program, ruling it unlawful.

Neal Katyal Leads Court Victory
Among the lawyers challenging the tariffs was Neal Katyal, the former Acting U.S. Solicitor General and Indian-origin attorney. Katyal, who represented the plaintiffs, called the decision a significant check on presidential power, as the court ruled Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs had been imposed illegally.

Trump Lashes Out at Court Ruling
In response, Trump immediately vowed to appeal and took to Truth Social, alleging political bias among the judges. He argued that tariffs had generated “trillions of dollars” for the U.S. and claimed the court’s decision endangered national security. Trump praised one Democratic-appointed judge who dissented, saying that he “had the courage” to stand with him.

Tariffs at the Center of Trump’s Agenda
Trump’s tariff strategy remains central to his economic agenda as he campaigns for a second term. Despite criticism from economists who warn tariffs fuel inflation and raise consumer prices, Trump and his advisers insist that the costs fall on foreign producers, not Americans. The Federal Reserve, however, has linked the tariffs to higher inflation levels.

Administration Pushback
Key Trump allies have also condemned the court’s ruling. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended tariffs during a media appearance, questioning why foreign nations complain about them if American consumers truly bear the costs. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro went further, accusing the judges of partisan bias and labeling the decision “weaponized injustice.” He expressed hope that the Supreme Court would ultimately side with Trump.

Impact on U.S.-India Relations
The tariff dispute also carries international consequences. The Trump administration’s decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on India has strained relations, pushing New Delhi closer to Beijing. Analysts warn this could complicate U.S. efforts to counter China’s growing influence in Asia.

Political and Economic Stakes
The ruling arrives at a sensitive time for Trump’s administration. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release a closely watched jobs report, the first since Trump dismissed BLS commissioner Erika McEntarfer following weaker-than-expected employment data. With interim leadership now in place at BLS, the upcoming report will be a key test for the administration’s economic credibility.
