Howard Lutnick, United States Commerce Secretary told US Media:
- He criticised the current H-1B visa system as "fundamentally flawed", arguing that it enables the entry of low-cost tech consultants who then bring their families to the US.
- This procedure and process goes into effect in February 2026. My guess is there are going to be a significant number of changes between now and 2026. As of right now, it is going to be a one-time fee of $100,000 .
- At least it shouldn't be overrun with these people. But I think you're going to see a real thoughtful change going forward. And that's what I expect will happen .
- I am firmly of the view that this idea—of bringing in inexpensive tech consultants to this country and having them bring their families—is wrong .
- Everyone agrees that the process that was set up in the 1990s and sort of butchered along the way needs to change
- This H-1B is a lottery. Yesterday, I talked to the heads of two of the top five tech companies in the world and they said doing a lottery for skilled workers coming into America is bizarre.
- Lutnick recommended prioritising high-skilled workers over low-cost tech consultants. We should give highly skilled jobs to highly skilled workers.
