Last week, in an email to employees, NRI Sundar Pichai CEO said: "I have some difficult news to share. We've decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles." Pichai said the layoffs at Google were carried out after a “rigorous review" of its operations.

  • Google will lay off 12,000 jobs across the globe, becoming the latest tech giant after Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon to retrench staff en mass amid the global economic downturn.
  • Microsoft announced 10,000 job cuts, or nearly 5 per cent of its workforce.
  • Amazon is also cutting 18,000 jobs and Facebook parent Meta is trimming 11,000 positions.

In 2022, The Washington Post wrote: nearly 2,00,000 IT workers have been laid off, including some record numbers in companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon.

From January to June, 2022, over 55,000 tech workers are being let go across 154 companies.

It means that January 2023 is already the biggest single month for tech layoffs since the beginning of 2022.
