California 300,000 Real ID Holders must updated their license

California 300,000 Real ID Holders must updated their license due to
DMV Error

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced that a small number of REAL ID records require updates following a proactive review of its data systems. Approximately 325,000 individuals — about 1.5% of California’s REAL ID holders — will be notified and asked to take action in the coming weeks and months.

The DMV emphasized that only customers who receive an official notice need to update their licenses. Nearly 99% of REAL ID holders are unaffected and do not need to take any action.

According to the DMV, the issue was traced to a legacy software configuration dating back to 2006 that affected how expiration dates were applied to some REAL IDs issued to noncitizens with lawful presence in the United States, such as permanent residents and visa holders. While legal status was properly verified at the time of issuance, the system automatically applied standard renewal periods in certain cases instead of linking expiration dates to the individual’s authorized stay, as required under federal rules.

DMV Director Steve Gordon said the department identified the issue during a routine systems review and is providing clear guidance to impacted customers. He added that all REAL IDs were issued only after federal verification and that no IDs were issued to undocumented individuals.

To assist affected customers, the DMV will expedite the reissuance process and waive any associated fees. Full federal enforcement of REAL ID requirements began on May 7, 2025.
