U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported U.S. authorities arrested 49 illegal aliens, among 30 Indian nationals in recent weeks during immigration enforcement actions targeting commercial truck drivers.
Between Nov 23 - Dec 12, agents from the Indio Station arrested 42 individuals who were operating commercial trucks on interstates or passing through immigration checkpoints along highways 86 and 111 in California.
Of those arrested, 30 were citizens of India, while two were from El Salvador. The remaining individuals were nationals of China, Eritrea, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Russia, Somalia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said:
- The individuals were found in possession of commercial driver’s licenses and were detained during vehicle inspections at immigration checkpoints as well as joint operations with other federal agencies.
- The arrests were carried out by agents from the El Centro Sector, primarily during traffic stops involving semitrucks.
- The enforcement actions reflect a broader focus on interior operations. El Centro Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Joseph Remenar said arrests made within the United States since the start of Fiscal Year 2026 have exceeded those made at the border, highlighting what he described as the impact of stronger border security measures.
- The operation was launched following several fatal traffic incidents involving commercial trucks driven by individuals who were allegedly residing in the U.S. illegally.
- Authorities said the goal was to enforce immigration laws, improve highway safety, and uphold regulatory standards within the commercial transportation industry.
Authorities said:
- California issued 31 of the commercial driver’s licenses recovered during the operations. Additional licenses were issued by Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
Remenar said the individuals arrested should not have been operating commercial vehicles and emphasized continued cooperation between CBP and other federal agencies to prioritize public safety.
